St Mary’s Island
St Mary’s Island is a spectacular island due to its natural formation of salt rock. Due to the volcanic rock formation being unique in a country like India, the island is listed as a Geological Monument in Karnataka and India. Another major attraction at the island is the cross that Vasco Da Gama placed when he found the island back in 1498. He named it O Padrao de Santa Maria and hence the name St Mary’s Island. There are scientific records that the Island got separated from Madagascar due to the shift of tectonic plates as the same kind of rocks are found in both the places. To travel here, one must travel for about 6km from the Malpe Beach via boats.
