The Tibetans moved in large numbers here after they were asked to leave from their home land by the Chinese. Apart from the Tibetan settlement, Bylakuppe is also famous for its Buddhist monasteries, handicrafts, carpet factories, and incense factory. The famous among the monasteries in the town is the Great Gompa of Sera Jey and Sera Mey. Also known as the seat of Panchen Lama, Tashi Lhumpo is another important monastery.
