Gokarna is not just a beach town but also a spiritual town made of several temples. Gokarna is famous for its Sanskrit learning since a whole lot of Sanskrit scholars visit the place on a daily basis. Apart from beaches and Sanskrit learning, Gokarna is also known for its Mahabaleshwara temple. The holy shrine is dedicated to Lord Shiva. The temple has been mentioned in epics such as Ramayana and Mahabharata. The temple is said to be named as Dakshin Kashi which means the Kashi of the South. Other famous temples here include Ganapati temple and the Koti Theertha, a temple tank where pilgrims perform their ablutions.
